Electronic control systems in turbo diesel engines have been used for more than 15 years now, and they are an excellent way to increase power in the utility cars.
A new or a used car with a turbo diesel engine may undergo tuning by replacing software or by applying a box, thus receiving excellent results.
The increase in power obtained that way is 20–30%, the same increase is achieved in torque value, frequently accompanied by simultaneous increase in engine flexibility.
When driving we feel as if we installed 30% more powerful engine or as if we sat in a higher class car.
Turbo diesel engine chiptuning is carried out by two methods
- Installing a box it means an additional device, converting signal of the computer controlling injection, thus increasing performance. The advantage of this solution is a simple installation and possibility to dismantle the device. The disadvantage is a little smaller improvement of performance and possibility of small increase in fuel consumption during top speed driving.
- Replacing software in the serial controlling computer. Depending on the car model it may be carried out by a diagnostic connector (without dismantling the computer) or there may be a necessity to dismantle the injection computer and resolder a memory chip. The advantage of such a solution is reduced fuel consumption and better performance after modification. In this case it is also possible to restore the serial program.
The time needed to carry out the aforementioned services is 1 to 4 hours including the measurement with the dynamometer before and after modernisation. The approximate cost ranges from PLN 1200 to PLN 1500 depending on the car model.
Turbo diesel engine chiptuning is a very efficient method to increase power without simultaneous reduction of the engine endurance.
In petrol engines chiptunig is applied in the following cases:
- For engines with a turbo charger under similar rules and with as good results as for turbo diesel engines
- For suction engines of utility cars, however the increase in power and torque is not significant here – about 5 %
- For engines after remarkable mechanical modifications such as: replacement of timing assembly in order to adjust the fuel supply system and ignition to suit the modifications performed
In the petrol engines with more extensive scope of modifications such as: preparation for high-performance driving, special fully programmable computers controlling injection and ignition are applied.
